Vaisala receives “Highly Commended” recognition at the 2024 Instrumentation Excellence Awards Buildings and Indoor Air Quality Industrial Measurements Vaisala’s Daisy-chain solution for humidity and temperature measurement was awarded “Highly Commended” in the Sensor Product of the Year category during a prestigious ceremony at London’s Grand Connaught Rooms.Vaisala’s Sales Manager for Data centers, David Murray, and Product Manager Anu Kätkä were in attendance to celebrate the recognition. Expressing her delight, Anu said: “The daisy-chain solution was developed in partnership with one of our data center customers to meet their environmental improvement goals. As a result, we have been able to dramatically reduce the amount of cabling required, significantly lowering the carbon footprint of installations, and enhancing sustainability.”Vaisala defines its core purpose as Taking every measure for the planet. “This commendation is a great example of how we can leverage innovation and respond to market needs to make a positive impact on the future,” Anu adds. The environmental benefits of the daisy-chain solution were key to its recognition. As David explains: “It also dramatically reduces installation time and minimizes the possibility of wiring mistakes, providing operators with a faster, clearer, more reliable picture of their environmental control systems. Coupled with the high-end accuracy and reliability of these sensors, this solution offers greater opportunities for energy efficiency improvements.” Daisy-chain example: If we imagine a 100m data center aisle, with 30 instruments at 3-meter spacing, each with a dedicated cable and a 3-meter cable drop – that single aisle would require about 1695 meters of cable. That’s more than a mile! In contrast, Vaisala’s Daisy-chain Solution reduces cabling to just 187 meters, representing an 89% reduction in carbon footprint. How sensor chaining is making colocation data centers more sustainable Sensor chaining, also known as daisy chaining, is the perfect solution for colocation data centers. A sensor chaining solution consists of a cable running from a control panel down two data center aisles, with temperature and humidity probes attached via three-way splitters along the length.
