In-line caustic solution monitoring in cellulose sausage skins production
Cellulose is widely used in the production of synthetic sausage skins. Cellulosic material (e.g. wood) is mixed with alkaline solution to produce a dissolved cellulosic feedstock. This dope is then processed and extruded, and dried and rolled for the use as a sausage skin.
Sodium hydroxide content monitoring in the caustic solution preparation
The cellulose fibers cloth is used as sausage casing. The cloth goes though precipitation for viscose purification and is then desulfurized by passing it through a Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) bath. The caustic solution is prepared by mixing water and a concentrated solution of NaOH.
Download the application note to learn the details on how Vaisala Polaris Sanitary Refractometer provides continuous and real-time information needed for maintaining the target concentration of the caustic solution. The measurement:
- eliminates the need for manual sampling and testing
- provides automatic operation of the process
