Product Safety Notification: Veriteq Data Loggers Published: May 22, 2018 Industrial Measurements Veriteq Data Loggers, Spectrum Model 5, have in rare cases experienced over-heating of the lithium battery. These devices were produced between 1997 to 2013. There have been three reported cases globally. Although the possibility of the battery over-heating is extremely small, Vaisala recommends to immediately stop using affected data loggers and dispose of them according to instructions.Vaisala has identified that in very rare cases the Veriteq-branded Data Loggers are subject to potentially experience over-heating when using the Data Logger connected to network via an external serial or USB cable. The serial line connection may unintentionally start to recharge the lithium-thionyl-chloride battery inside the Data Logger. Although very unlikely, the over-heating may in some instances breach the casing.Affected productsThe affected product models are VL1000, SP1000, VL1400, SP1400, VL1700, SP1700, VL2000, SP2000, VL4000 and SP4000. The products can be identified by the physical appearance and a Veriteq label (see examples below). They can be identified also by the serial numbers 00 000 001 through 13 999 999 and 97 000 001 through 99 999 999. The affected model Data Loggers have a rectangular, 10-pin Harwin serial port for connection instead of a standard D-connector.Required ActionsTo prevent the risk of the battery over-heating, disconnect any Veriteq Spectrum Model 5 Data Logger that is connected to any external network or serial converter. When removing the Data Logger from your location, if visual inspection shows damage or leaking residue, please wear protective garments – i.e. safety glasses and gloves. Do not ship the units back to Vaisala. Please discard them as per the battery manufacturer Tadiran’s Safety NoticeCorrective ActionWe recommend replacing old Veriteq Spectrum Data Logger Model 5 units with a current production version DL Data Logger Model 6 (see picture below).
