Catalytic Oxidation Process: Formaldehyde Formaldehyde quality control in oxidation Formaldehyde, CH2O (also known as methanal) is a gas that is used for sterilizing purposes. It is produced in the process of oxidation, and to some extent, by utilizing silver catalyst method. In the process of oxidation, a mixture of liquid ethanol, air and recycled stack gases are fed into evaporator. After the evaporator, the gas mixture is fed to a tube reactor and charged with molybdenum-based catalyst. The methanol content is maintained at 6-10 % of volume. Afterwards, the gases are cooled and the heat is used for methanol evaporation. The formaldehyde is then absorbed using the condensation liquid. Vaisala Polaris™ Process Refractometer is used for measuring the formaldehyde concentration and maintaining it at required levels, typically between 37% and 45%. This ensures consistent product quality and eliminates the need for additional product treatment. Download the application note in PDF by filling the form.
