Starch sweeteners ion exchange column regeneration

Liquid demineralization prior and after isomerization is an essential processing step during starch sweeteners manufacturing. Demineralization prior the isomerization enhances the reaction and removes the trace components, such as ash and protein after. Demineralization is usually performed through anion and cation exchange resins consisting commonly of 6 columns. One column is always in regeneration phase where minerals are removed electrochemically with strong Hydrochloric acid (HCI). Before regeneration can take place, the columns must be rinsed with water to remove any sugar residue. This process is referred to as sweetening-off.
