Research and Development

Test Engineer Intern (HQ, Finland) 

As a Test Engineer Intern, you will work on the Wafer Tester Temperature Studies project to improve the performance of Vaisala’s production test system for humidity and temperature sensors at the sensor factory. Your tasks include documenting the current temperature measurement capability, identifying and implementing improvements, and developing and validating a prototype to ensure production quality. You will use 3D modeling tools to analyze the system, pinpoint areas for improvement, and execute a plan. We are looking for a master’s student in Mechanical Engineering with an understanding of physics and thermodynamics, skills in SolidWorks simulation and SolidWorks Flow Simulation, 3D modeling and rapid prototyping, and the ability to create clear technical documentation.

 

Natural Sciences or Technology Intern (HQ, Finland) 

As a Natural Sciences or Technology Intern, you will work on the Sensor Stability vs Visual Appearance: Correlation Analysis project. Your role is to investigate how the visual appearance of newly developed sensors relates to their performance under harsh conditions, combining hands-on testing with data analysis. Tasks include planning and running stability tests, examining sensors using microscopy, applying statistical analysis to explore correlations, and summarizing findings into clear recommendations for factory visual inspection criteria. We are looking for a master’s student in chemistry, physics, materials science, data science, or a related field, who is comfortable working in a laboratory environment. 

 

Digital Prototype Testing Intern (HQ, Finland) 

As a Digital Prototype Testing Intern, you will work on the Digital Prototype Testing with Simulation Tools project at Vaisala in Finland. Your role is to explore how digital simulation can replace or reduce physical prototype testing by building and validating a simulation model for vibration and thermal performance of a selected Vaisala product. Deliverables include a report and recommendations for integrating simulation-based testing into the hardware development process. We are looking for a student with a background in mechanical engineering, physics, or a similar field. Skills in CAD modeling and simulation tools (such as SolidWorks Simulation) are highly desirable, and an interest in experimental validation and data analysis is a plus. 

 

Scientist Intern (HQ, Finland)

As a Scientist Intern, you will work on the Concept of Testing Packaged Infrared Sources and Detectors in Production project at Vaisala’s HQ in Vantaa as part of the Giant Leap program. Your role is to design and develop a concept for a tester that enables functional testing of packaged infrared sources and detectors and validate the concept by demonstrating key measurements in the lab. By the end of the summer, you will deliver a validated concept and recommendations for integrating the tester into production. We are looking for a master’s student in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics, Photonics, or a related field. A good understanding of optics and electronics is essential. 

Software Development, Data and AI

Brand AI Development Intern (HQ, Finland)

As an AI Brand intern, you will design, build, and pilot an AI Brand Assistant as part of the Vaisala Brand AI Tool project, supporting teams across Marketing, Sales, and HR in their daily work. The project includes user research, feature definition, prototype development, and team coaching to ensure AI actively contributes to brand stewardship. We are looking for a master’s student in the final stages of their degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science with an AI/ML focus, Information Networks, Computational Design, or Digital Art, combining technical skills with design and workflow analysis.
 

Data Management Intern (HQ, Finland)

As a Data Management Intern, you will lead the “Practical Data Governance” initiative as part of the Data Foundations for Future Vaisala project, making data governance actionable within Vaisala’s new data platform and governance tools. Your work will include mapping key data assets and AI/ML use cases, piloting documentation and approval practices, and creating clear guidelines for responsible data and AI use. We are looking for a bachelor’s or master’s student in a relevant field such as Information Systems, Industrial Engineering and Management, Data Science, Computer Science, or Business Analytics, with a genuine interest in data platforms, governance tools, and AI/ML solutions.
 

AI Optimization Intern (HQ, Finland)

As an AI Optimization Intern, you will work on the Small but Mighty: Understanding the Potential of Small Language Models for the Enterprise project. Your role is to investigate the viability of Small Language Models (SLMs) such as Gemini Nano, Phi-3, and Llama 3 8B for specialized internal use cases where large models are inefficient. You will optimize or fine-tune an SLM for high-value domains like production cell data analysis, operational data, or complex policy querying, aiming to improve accuracy while reducing compute costs and environmental impact. We are looking for a student in Computer Science, Data Science, or AI/ML engineering with experience in Python and ML frameworks (PyTorch or TensorFlow), and an interest in model optimization, fine-tuning, and sustainable computing. A pragmatic, efficiency-focused mindset and curiosity about “Green AI” are essential.
 

AI Workflow Intern (HQ, Finland)

As an AI Content Workflow Automation intern, you will lead the project: Developing AI Agents for Product Content Workflows from insight to implementation, working closely with a team of 18 content professionals to make content creation leaner, simpler, and partially automated. Your tasks include analyzing current processes, implementing AI agents to support daily work, and building a roadmap for future improvements. We are looking for a master’s student in a relevant field such as information technology, computer science, or automation, with studies in areas like AI and machine learning, language technology and natural language processing, automation, or process optimization.
 

GenAI Developer Intern (HQ, Finland)

As a GenAI Developer intern, you will develop a pilot AI-based module as part of the AI-Assisted Test Procedure Generation Module project, which generates standardized test procedures (such as FAT/SAT) using templates and project input data, supporting automation within Projects, Caretech, and Services (PCS). Your tasks include building an AI-assisted prototype, defining validation checks, refining templates with real project examples, and automating repetitive engineering documentation work. We are looking for a bachelor’s or master’s student in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Automation, or similar, with Python programming experience, familiarity with APIs and backend services, and exposure to AI/ML or automation projects.
 

Industrial Engineering Intern (HQ, Finland)

As an Industrial Engineering intern, you will help build an AI-based Market Insights tool as part of the Commercial Market Insights & AI project, transforming scattered information into clear, actionable guidance for Vaisala’s sales and product teams. Your work includes gathering and structuring data from multiple sources, defining and testing prompts, refining categorization, and creating a sustainable insights hub that supports ongoing market understanding. We are looking for a student in business, industrial engineering and management, information and service management, data/analytics, or a similar field, ideally in the final stage of studies, with basic experience using generative AI tools and the ability to work with both qualitative and quantitative information.
 

Customer 360 Analytics Intern  (HQ, Finland)

As a Customer 360 & AI Service Upselling intern, you will design and prototype a Customer 360 dashboard as part of the Customer 360 dashboard to drive account management and AI-powered service upselling project. The dashboard will consolidate key customer data and use analytics and AI to identify service upsell opportunities, supporting data-driven account planning and management. Your work will include creating actionable views for sales and service, framing AI opportunities, and delivering a working prototype or detailed mock-up with initial upsell logic and clear documentation. We are looking for a student pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering and Management, Information Systems, Business Information Technology, Data Science, Analytics, or Economics with a strong interest in data, CRM, or sales/service development.
 

Product Marketing Intern (HQ, Finland)

As a Product Marketing intern, you will explore how buyers increasingly use Large Language Models (LLMs) to discover, compare, and shortlist solutions as part of the Enabling LLM-Ready Product Marketing: Increasing Vaisala Product Visibility in AI-Assisted Buying Journeys project. You will determine how Vaisala’s product information should be structured and optimized for LLM discoverability. Your tasks include researching how LLMs evaluate product content, auditing current materials, experimenting with alternative formats, and creating a prototype content package that showcases LLM-friendly product information. We are looking for a student in the late stages of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in marketing, business, technology, information systems, engineering, or a similar discipline, ideally with experience or strong interest in prompt engineering, basic SEO knowledge, and an understanding of product marketing principles.
 

R&D Data Engineer Intern (HQ, Finland)

As an R&D Data Engineer intern, you will develop an AI-powered solution as part of the AI Agents for Product Health Analysis project within the Products & Technologies team in Vaisala’s Weather, Energy, and Environment business area. You will integrate data from multiple sources, design and implement AI agents that create actionable insights, automate workflows, and collaborate with technical and business stakeholders to maximize impact. We are looking for a motivated student with basic to intermediate programming skills in Python or similar languages, understanding of AI concepts and APIs, and the ability to work with structured and unstructured data for analysis.
 

AI Driven Test Automation Intern (HQ, Finland)

As an AI Driven Test Automation intern, you will explore how AI can accelerate the modernization of Vaisala’s test automation platform as part of the AI Assisted Test Automation for Modernizing Vaisala's Core Test Platforms project. You will create AI workflow tooling for a new test framework by migrating an existing test suite using AI and language model instructions, starting manually and then increasingly through AI-driven automation. We are looking for a student with studies or experience in software testing and test automation, basic to intermediate Python coding skills, and basic Linux experience. Knowledge of AI/LLM-based software engineering and Yocto Linux is considered a plus. 
 

F&C Process Automation Intern (HQ, Finland)

As a Finance & Control Process Automation Intern, you will deliver a hands-on Finance & Controls process automation project end-to-end and draft a practical roadmap for scaling automation beyond the summer. Your work includes mapping current workflows, co-designing target processes with stakeholders, executing a limited-scope pilot through build and testing, and identifying further automation opportunities with clear sequencing and governance proposals. We are looking for a master’s student in the final stage of their degree in Finance, Accounting, Industrial Engineering, Business Analytics, Information Systems, or a similar discipline, with prior experience in finance processes and a strong interest in process development and automation.
 

Data Scientist Intern (Harpenden, UK)

As a Data Scientist Intern, you will work on the Data Cleaning Automation project at Vaisala’s Harpenden, UK office. Your role is to advance Vaisala’s applied machine learning capabilities to clean historical weather data by developing, improving, and automating data cleaning techniques. Tasks include experimenting with modeling approaches for weather variables, collaborating with software developers to integrate solutions into workflows, and automating client data cleaning processes for ML models. We are looking for a student with hands-on experience with ML libraries (such as scikit-learn, XGBoost, PyTorch, or TensorFlow), proficiency in Python, and familiarity with statistical methods. Knowledge of meteorological datasets, software development (ideally in C#), and excellent communication skills are essential.
 

AI Solution Intern (Boulder, USA)

As an AI Solution Intern, you will work on the AI Solution for Service Reporting project at Vaisala’s WE2 service center in Boulder, USA, where we evaluate, repair, and calibrate high-complexity weather measurement devices. Your role is to explore and integrate AI tools into daily workflows to reduce time spent on collecting and reporting analysis notes, enabling technicians to focus on core service tasks. We are looking for a bachelor’s graduate or master’s student in Electrical Engineering or Industrial Engineering, with experience using AI models and tools and ideas on how to apply them in practice.
 

Weather Sensor Intern (Boulder, USA)

As an Weather Sensor Intern, you will work on the Weather Sensor Exception Classifier Process Pipeline on LAMP Stack project at Vaisala’s Boulder office. Building on last year’s proof of concept outage classifier and Nagios monitoring tools, your role is to develop a production-ready service that automatically reviews critical alerts, analyzes xWeather data and historical trends, and infers root causes, confounding factors, and troubleshooting steps. This solution will scale across lightning, wind lidars, weather radar, airports, and other observation networks. We are looking for a computer science or engineering student with experience in full-stack LAMP development, time series data, and an interest in deterministic machine learning. Familiarity with Python, FastAPI, and Flask is preferred. 

Operations Development

User Experience Design Intern  (HQ, Finland)

As a User Experience Design intern, you will improve the usability and discoverability of Vaisala’s problem-solving tools as part of the Problem Solving Tools for Everyone project. You will design a centralized portal that makes methods, templates, and guidance easy to find and use. Your work includes creating intuitive instructions, integrating access to coaches, and ensuring a consistent, user-centered experience that supports effective problem solving across the global organization. We are looking for a student with skills in user experience design, human–technology interaction, and the ability to translate complex tools into clear, intuitive user experiences. Visual design skills, a problem-solving mindset, structured thinking, and creativity to design practical solutions are essential.
 

Industrial/Production Engineering or Data Science Intern  (HQ, Finland)

As an Industrial/Production Engineering or Data Science Intern, you will work on the Developing Manufacturing Rework Data Collection and Measuring Capability project. Your role is to create an effective method to collect, categorize, report, and utilize rework data in Vaisala’s production environment. Tasks include interviewing end users and stakeholders, designing practical ways to capture rework data, piloting a recording method, defining meaningful metrics, and creating clear instructions to ensure adoption and sustainability. We are looking for a late bachelor’s or master’s student in Industrial Engineering and Management, Production/Operations Engineering, Data Science, or a related field, with strong communication skills in English and Finnish, understanding of data capture and utilization, process design, lean principles, and manufacturing environments.  
 

Electrical or Software Engineer Intern (HQ, Finland)

As an Electrical or Software Engineer Intern, you will work on the Service Diagnosis Data Generation and Utilization project. Your role is to improve diagnosis data generation methods for Vaisala’s weather observation equipment by establishing standardized databases and exploring AI solutions for creating business insights. Tasks include learning hands-on service center repair and testing processes, collaborating with experts to design comprehensive data generation methods, creating and piloting prototype solutions, and recommending AI approaches to add customer value. We are looking for a bachelor’s or master’s student in electrical, software, or industrial engineering who is interested in working with people, learning, and challenging existing ideas. Experience with databases, Python or C#, and curiosity about AI are considered beneficial.
 

Process or Automation Engineer Intern (HQ, Finland)

As a Process or Automation Engineer Intern, you will work on the Accurate Service Delivery Throughput Time project at Vaisala’s HQ in Vantaa as part of the Giant Leap program. Your role is to analyze the total throughput times of Vaisala’s top services and recommend improvements to standardize and streamline delivery. Tasks include performing calibrations, shadowing experts, tracking time spent on services, and compiling findings into a report with actionable recommendations. We are looking for a student with a technical background, ideally in process engineering or a similar field, who can work effectively as part of a team while also showing initiative and independence. 

Business and Sales Development

Global Key Account Management Intern (HQ, Finland)

As a Global Key Account Management Intern, you will work on the Global Key Account Management for Life Science project, which aims to develop a global view of Vaisala’s business potential with large pharma accounts and propose strategic key account plans to improve long-term value capture. Your tasks include consolidating data and presenting findings to the business line and regions, conducting Teams calls with key sales managers and account directors, developing tools to maintain strategic account plans, and piloting the approach with 1–2 accounts before rolling it out globally. We are looking for a student with a background in industrial management with a biosciences minor, or vice versa, or in marketing, strategy, business analysis, B2B marketing, or general business management.
 

Marketing Intern (HQ, Finland)

As a Marketing intern, you will lead a three-month NextGen Strategies to Elevate Defense Market Engagement project to design a next-generation Defense Meteorology marketing strategy for Vaisala’s Flagship Business Unit. Your work will include conducting desk research on defense-market engagement, analyzing customer and campaign data, refining audience segments, and benchmarking channel strategies and tactics. We are looking for a university student in a relevant field such as business, marketing, international business, industrial engineering and management, political science, or security/defense studies, with strong analytical skills, ability to work with both qualitative and quantitative data, and proficiency in creating clear presentations in English.  
 

Market Analyst Intern  (HQ, Finland)

As a Market Analyst intern, you will analyze the market potential for atmospheric methane flux as part of the Market Study on Atmospheric Methane Flux Solutions project. You will focus on the next 3–10 years in target markets such as the EU, North America, and China. Your work includes identifying promising ecosystems, understanding customer needs, and assessing current technical solutions and their limitations to deliver insights that guide Vaisala’s strategy in this emerging market. We are looking for a fourth-year Industrial Engineering and Management student who is fluent in English, with additional language skills such as French or German considered an advantage. You should be outgoing, motivated, structured, and able to work independently after initial guidance.
 

Business Developer & Market Analyst Intern (Saclay, France)

As a Business Developer & Market Analyst Intern, you will work on the Aurora Leads — Future Growth and Opportunities in Northern Europe project at Vaisala’s Paris-Saclay office in France. Your role is to contribute to the commercial development of wind lidars by conducting market research and supporting sales activities. Tasks include identifying and using prospecting tools, analyzing market potential, targeting and qualifying leads, and assisting with offer preparation and opportunity follow-up. We are looking for a final-year business school or master’s student specializing in international business, strategy, or marketing, ideally with prior experience in international sales or renewable energy. Strong analytical skills, knowledge of the sales cycle, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and familiarity with CRM tools (such as Salesforce) are essential. Fluent English is required; additional language skills such as Swedish, Finnish, or Danish are a plus.

Learning and development

We invest in your growth and organize a set of trainings throughout the summer to support your internship journey and project. Along with lessons from your own field, you will learn, for example project management, presentation skills and team work.

During the summer, you will meet and connect with Vaisala professionals from our diverse teams and participate in summer activities with other Giant Leap trainees. As a Giant Leaper, you become a valued member of a team and get a mentor to support you throughout the program.

Eligibility for Giant Leap

For the Giant Leap program, we're looking for students who are actively pursuing a degree in a university or polytechnic school, and are fluent in both spoken and written English. We value team players with curious minds, eager to learn more and ask questions.

Many of our projects are especially well suited for students in the later stages of their studies. When applying for a project, applicants are expected to hold a valid work permit in the country they are applying to.
